The Altar Within: A Modern Black Spirituality

A modern spirituality does not require us to abandon reason for reverence. It asks only that we make a little room — a shelf, a windowsill, a corner of the morning — where the sacred can be tended without apology.

For Black women especially, the altar within is an act of return: to the water rituals, the herb knowledge, the call-and-response between the living and the departed. We are not inventing a faith. We are remembering one.
