Rituals of the Toilette

The toilette is a ceremony we have too often been taught to rush. Yet the slow work of readying oneself — the braiding, the anointing, the choosing — is heritage, and it is resistance. To take one's time is to insist that one's time is worth taking.
The most radical luxury we can practice is unhurried attention to ourselves. The Oracle treats the ritual of getting ready as exactly that: a private liturgy, performed in the mirror, in a lineage of women who never once rushed their own becoming.
